Before making a formal application for postgraduate study you are strongly advised to contact us in order to obtain advice about your proposed study. Please indicate the area of research you are interested in, a description of your area of research, and a brief academic history. Making contact with us is particularly important for candidates interested in research since they must ensure that we have the facilities and the expert supervision that will be necessary. Any new research postgraduate student has to be assigned to an academic staff member. It is helpful to identify in advance any special conditions that may apply in the candidate's proposed area of study.

International students

HySA/catalysis welcomes applications for postgraduate study from international students. It is important that you are aware, that as an international student, you are responsible for funding your studies for the duration of your degree programme. You will need to take into consideration the cost of air fares, visas, medical insurance, tuition fees, books, daily travel, food and clothing. Your fees are payable prior to registration.

A limited number of scholarships are available to graduates who are not South African. These are awarded on a competitive basis and preference is given to senior candidates.

The Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment offers a generous system of international scholarships to encourage student diversity. The scholarships are awarded to first time registering postgraduates on the basis of academic merit. The award is granted for one academic year at a time. International students should apply to their own government or appropriate ministry for details on funding. Students with outstanding debts will not be permitted to register the following year or to graduate.

Funding

Limited financial support is available in the form of scholarships, bursaries and student loans. Certain awards are granted exclusively on academic merit, while others take financial need into account.

  1. Submission of academic qualifications
    1. UCT Graduates
      Applicants who are, or have been registered students at UCT are not required to submit a copy of their UCT academic record.
    2. South African Universities other than UCT
      If you are, or have been registered as a student at another South African university you should:
      1. obtain in a sealed envelope from the university concerned an original full transcript of your academic record for all the years of study (this transcript must include all details of courses taken and the marks obtained).
      2. attach certified copies of your degree certificates to your application form.
    3. Foreign Universities
      If you have been, or are a registered student at a university or similar institution outside the Republic of South Africa, you must:
      1. obtain in a sealed envelope from the university concerned an original full transcript of your academic record for all the years of study (this transcript must include all details of courses taken and the marks obtained).
      2. attach certified copies of all your degree certificates to your application form.
      3. documentation not in English must be accompanied by an original sworn translation, signed by a Notary Public.
      4. an original SAQA evaluation certificate or a certified copy signed by a Notary Public. The onus is on the student to apply timeously to SAQA, as this process is quite lengthy. Your foreign degrees have to be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

  2. Certified copy of your Identity Document/Passport
  3. Certified copy of your school leaving certificate (excludes UCT graduates)
  4. A detailed curriculum vitae. PhD applicants to please include in their CV a summary of their Master's research and list any publications which may have arisen through their research.
  5. Letters of reference in a sealed envelope (one from the professor under whom you have studied and if applicable one from your employer).
  6. Any new applicant for postgraduate study has to be assigned to an academic staff member who will ultimately become their supervisor. Applicants must contact HySA/catalysis and indicate the area of research they are interested in prior to their formal application. Include with your application the name of the academic staff member you made contact with and a description of your area of research. PhD applicants see guidelines for PhD applications.
  7. The medium of instruction and examination at UCT is English. We require students to be proficient in English before they register. You will need to include an original copy of your TOEFL or IELTS score or a letter from your institution confirming that the medium of instruction at your university was in English.

We advise that you regularly check the status of your application once you receive confirmation from UCT Admissions Office that they have received your application.
